DIS prides itself on the exceptional pastoral care it provides to our students and community. At the forefront are teachers who are appointed and trained to specific pastoral roles throughout the school. In addition to this we have a full time Well-being Advisor, Yusr Mahmud.
The role of the Well-being Advisor is to respond to students personal, social, emotional and academic concerns and to provide a caring and non-judgmental environment in which the students at Deira International School can improve their well-being. Yusr’s background in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is used to equip staff, parents and students with tools and techniques to manage any difficulties that may arise. Individual sessions are offered to students, staff and parents to explore any concerns to ensure a successful learning experience in the school. Support is provided in a diverse range of issues relating to mental health difficulties such as stress, anxiety and low mood. Regular workshops are offered to train staff and parents in areas such as stress management and mindfulness. Yusr Mahmud worked in the NHS providing therapy in outpatient settings for many years before beginning at DIS.
The Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) “DIS effectively prioritises the health and safety of their students. Strong guidance develops students’ self-discipline and respect for others, supports their wellbeing and provides pathways for further education”.
