Dear Parents, Students and Friends

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Deira International School (DIS).

DIS forms a part of the Al-Futtaim Group and is a British Curriculum School in Dubai Festival City.

DIS is a happy and exciting place to learn and work where student-teacher relationships are strong and mutually respectful.

We opened our doors in 2005 with a student cohort of 240 students and a teaching team of 34 teachers. In September 2016 we started our 12th year of operation with the significant growth in numbers of students, teachers and supporting staff. We now have more than 1,600 students representing over 80 different nationalities, 160 experienced and dedicated teachers supported by our fantastic team of teacher assistants, class helpers, technicians, securities and administration staff.

DIS is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), British Schools Overseas (BSO) and International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). Our school is also a member of the British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) organisation and the Middle East IB Association (MEIBA).

We follow an English National Curriculum model which is adapted for the international context of our location and 80+ nationalities represented in our student body. Our senior students take the Cambridge Board IGCSE examinations in Year 11 and move into the authorised International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and International Baccalaureate Career-Related Certificate (IBCC) in Years 12-13. These highly regarded and internationally recognised pre-university qualifications, allow them the possibility of worldwide university entrance.

“We do not mould our students into what we want them to be; we simply unfold what is within.”

We believe in placing the student at the centre of their own education and that learning is a life-long experience, hence our school motto “Forever learning, forever achieving”. Students are encouraged to take some responsibility for their own learning and to support others in their efforts. We expect teachers to lead by example and demonstrate that they are reflective practitioners. We have an inclusive community approach to education.

We encourage parents to play their part in our educational partnership and we keep them informed of progress and concerns. Students, teachers and parents are given the opportunity to play their part in the decision making processes at appropriate times. We are proud of our established community partnerships and the community spirit that you will sense when you visit the school.

Together as a learning community we will continue to set and achieve the high standards that are expected of us. Our vision is to develop well balanced successful learners. We empower our students to exceed their potential and help them become responsible global citizens who understand and respect multicultural diversity. Our students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students’ involvement in our Community Action and Service (CAS) programme increases as they progress through the Primary and Secondary schools. These personal development activities increase their self-awareness, help develop new skills and require them to engage with issues within our community. We promote a culture of self-awareness and personal development, and understand the importance of developing the whole person; our students leave the school with the characteristics of the International Baccalaureate Student Profile.

As a successful school we will never stand still; we will continually strive for excellence by monitoring and evaluating our progress so that we know exactly where we are and what we need to do to improve. We know that the quality of the teacher in the classroom is the most critical component in achieving academic excellence.

“The most important person in our school is the pupil; the most important asset is the teacher”.
